Trying to learn Java! Help please
Hey all!

I am currently trying to learn Java Programming. I was wondering if anyone on here had any good advice as to how to get started or where to learn from? I have programming experience but I still consider myself a novice.

Now before you go posting random Google pages, I AM aware of how to search using Google :-p ... The main purpose of this thread is to ask those who are experienced or on their way, if they know of any good websites that they suggest taking a look at.

What I am trying to ask here is if anyone could point me in the right direction. Thank you all for your help! It's much appreciated.

What languages have you programmed in previously?

I've only really dabbled (always wanted to use that) in a few ... C++ , Java, HTML, CSS, Java Script ... but I never really got very far with Java Script and CSS unless I needed something done.

C++ I learned in a college level course in highschool, I was in the course for a year but really only learned "advanced" basics I guess I would consider it.

Now I'm trying to learn Java and am really interested in learning it in depth. Thanks.

I think you should should decide on something interesting to program (a tic-tac-toe game is a classic school assignment) and then try to learn how to do it. If the thing you are trying to program is interesting you will get lots of ideas and things you want to try out (for example a simple AI opponent in the tic-tac-toe example) and this motivation is what makes you learn.

I think that is a better way than following some boring examples on any random java tutorial site.

Get hold of Netbeans IDE and JavaDocs from http://java.sun.com which makes Java programming easier.

My first program is a Noughts and Crosses game and is quite hard to beat.
See http://www.pcguru.plus.com/projects.html

As with any programming problem, splitting the problem into small managable chunks helps a lot. Games tend to be fun to write than other programming projects.

Buy Java from Beginning to End. I love it. Best programming book I ever read.
