Bringing web site to PC
Hi

Is there a way using MS FP that I can upload a web site that belongs to me rather than download?

Here's what's happened - I purchased a new domain for my son who wants to start a kids gossip page for his friends who are about to start in comp school later this year (for my friends in the US - this is for kids aged 11 plus and is when they move from Junior School).

So, I did the necessary admin stuff - using my web space I have set him up with some space and his own domain. I created the first blank page on my PC, complete with FP extension passwords etc. When we then went to his PC to set this up so he can create and publish from that machine - we wanted to 'upload' what I had already created so he could continue from there!

Couldn't find out how to do this though? - any ideas?

It can be done with the frontpage web publishing wizard - but you may find it easier to simply use an FTP program such as WSFTP_LE .

Hi Snake-eyes

Thanks for your replies. Yup, the PC's are networked and I use ICS proided with Xp which on my set-up works fine. What I can't figure out how to do is to 'upload' from my ISP server to either my son's or my PC.

I can easily 'download' to any space or directory on my ISP server from either machine but as I was the one who put a few pages together for him to give him a few pointers, he now needs what I did on his PC. Also - I want to be able to check out what he has done and then ammend if needed i.e. he is doing a gossip site for his friends and he might inadvertantly put something on the site without understanding why he shouldn't!!!

So, I then need to be able to 'sync' the work that he has done and ammend. I suppose I could do this by using a shared folder on the network, but both our PC's are not necessarily on at the same time. Is there a way of 'sync'ing by 'uploading' what each of us have done before we make any further changes etc.

Ta in advance

John

First off, you are using the terms "Upload" and "Download" backwards which may cause some confusion as to what you are trying to do (even though you explained it well). Uploading is generally used when you are SENDING information TO a remote computer. Downloading is used when you GET information FROM a remote computer.

That being said, I do not know if you can do it directly in MS FP so I will give you and alternative way. Using Microsoft IE (5.0+ I think) enter this line into the address bar ftp://username:password@www.webspace.com/ replacing username, password, and www.webspace.com with the information your ISP gave you to "Upload" your web pages too. If this works correctly, you should see a list of all the files/folders on your webpage and you can simply "Download" them to the computer you are using. Alternatively, you can download an FTP client (ie. www.bpftp.com, www.cuteftp.com) and get the files this way. It is a little more complex but will give you error messages in more detail so it is easier to figure out what is wrong.

Hope this helps.

Or....you CAN do it with FP. Just go to the page you created and hit "edit with Front Page" on your toolbar. The page will open up and you can choose to "publish" the web to a file on either (or ANY, for that matter!) computer. Also, you can make the changes you want to the site this way and just hit "save" instead of publish, then the next time you, or your son, open the site the changes will always be there. It is a good idea to follow my directions for downloading your site to a local file on a very regular basis tho.....as the changes you make this way don't get saved to your computer!

Hope this helps!
