Post Solved: Edit Registry For System Restoration Possibilities
When i go to use the rstrui.exe file to Restore my system(Windows XP Professional Home Edition 256MB RAM) I get an error message saying that System Restore has been disabled by group policy. When I try to use the registry editor i get another error message saying that the file specified cannot be imported to the registry.

I know what to do to fix the System Restore problem however I can't get to the registry editor to do it. Can somebody put these steps into a format i can paste and save into a notepad .reg file.

want to edit my registry using notepad. i know it is not recommended but it is the only way i can do it at the moment as my reg editor is not functioning and i wish to be able to restore windows to the previous rollback point.

I wish to edit my registry according to these steps using notepad

1. Click Start, Run and type regedit.exe and press Enter

2. Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ SystemRestore

In the right-pane:

Delete the value DisableConfig
Delete the value DisableSR
3. Exit the Registry Editor.

I would like an exact text copy that i can paste into notepad, save then open to instantly edit my registry.

Create a REG file in notepad with the following in it:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore]
"DisableConfig"=-
"DisableSR"=-
Double click the REG file and it should delete the keys.

Did you perhaps leave out the first line?
the first line in the file has to be:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

No but i have another problem
i got into the registry using the CMD. i typed in regedit.exe
HOWEVER now i have another problem regarding the system restore AGAIN. but not the application itself. It involves the Rundll32.exe to reactivate the system restore application. windows apparently can't open it. and i believe it is due to all the shortcut and "file to file" links.

More detail needed on what the problem is.
What is the exact error message when you try to run System Restore?
Do you get the same error when running System Restore from Safe Mode?
Can you manually create a Restore point?

Is this a work PC? If so, they may have deleted numerous items that will prevent System Restore from working. You'd need to talk to your IT department to get System Restore enabled.
