Solved: Where to start in software develpment?
Hello everyone.

I'm very interested in software development, but I have no idea where to begin.

It would be nice to know how to build a small game to start perhaps a small app for a phone or something.

If anyone could recommend any books for begineers which would help me get started it would be much appreciated. I've been looking all over the net but can't find anything for beginners.

What computer language would be best to learn C++? Would I need a program to help build the software in?

Many thanks in advance for helping.

A good language to learn for beginners is Visual Basic, although there are others. A good tool to use would be Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2008. C++ is a programming language that needs to be compiled by a compiler. The source code however can be created in anything from Notepad to an IDE such as Visual C++ Express 2008.

I'm voting for VB. It's versitle and lots of code snippets around to help do things. I find the hardest thing about learning a new language is having a 'reason' to code. Building a virtual airplane with Java Script just seems like a lame way to learn...

Like... I want to ad a column to a table on the fly in access, I want the file owner and last update date for all files and subfolders in a directory.

Talking Hi
I have been programming for many years in a couple of languages. If you are planning to make a career out of it then i suggest that you learn C++ as it is becomming the most used language, if you decide to do this you should consider visiting learncpp.com and even my website sites.google.com/site/pcreapers mine isnt finished but it has the source code for hello world in 2 different languages at the momment i will be expanding to it.

However if you just want to do some apps for yourself then i would consider using visual basic because it is simple but powerful. I have done lots of different programming but i find that visual studio express will always come out top for me.

Thanks for your opinions. I've not decided if I'll make a career out of programming but you never know. It looks like C++ might be the best bet, as OdD_jOb mentions this is becoming the most used language and if I am to persue this I would rather code in the most common used language.

Thanks for recommending learncpp.com this looks like a good starting point. If theres any other websites or any books anybody reckons worth looking at please let me know.

Thanks again
Mark

Talking Library
Hi just take a trip down to your local library and look for books like C++ for dummies or any book that has code examples really because that is what you need right now. Or just search amazon for C++ for beginners and im sure you will get some results

Now a days a lot of open source technologies has evolved which are easy to program and design the websites. The look and feel of the websites is also good and they are even cost effective and can be completed in a very short span of time. So its better to implement these new web designing tools and techniques which are easy to handle.
