system properties
If you right click on the my computer icon on the desktop of windows 98 SE and click on properties. under the 'general' tab. on the left of the window is a computer monitor on the right is basic information about my computer. I'm trying to figure out how to customise this window so that I can put a picture beneath or instead of the picture of the computer monitor and instead of basic computer information I would like to write something else like welcome message or something. I have used a couple of software programs that do something like this in the past but I can't for the life of me figure out how they did it.

clues anyone?

That information is contained in the oeminfo.ini and the picture is oeminfo.bmp

just serach your system for those, and you open and change things in the ini file with Notepad, and use any imaging software like Paint, or the free IrfanView, to see the image. If you want to change the picture, then save any picture as a BMP sized at 173x47

thanks for your help it's just what I wanted. but not quite. I cant find either of those files on my computer. the closest is Oemreg.bin which is found in the c:\windows\system folder. I found something else that refers to these files on the internet that explain how to manipulate them but as I don't have those files I'm wondering if I could make them myself or is there something else I should be looking for. I am using windows 98 seccond edditon.

Check this link for more info -

http://www.aumha.org/a/oemdata.htm

If the files arent present then there is no harm in creating them manually... I've done that already and it works great.

Create the ini file using Notepad and bmp ofcourse you know where using MS-Paint. Try that and get back.
