Is it possible to use an IP ban script from a separate server?
I have a free message board hosted by a 3rd party with no IP banning capability. Is it possible to use a script on my server to ban IP's on my message board?
Thanks.

Yup this can be done with Javascript and SSI--If you have the capability to edit the HTML on the message board page. Heres the code from javascriptsource.com but with a 3rd party board I doubt you have the capability to make the page .shtml.

Here it is

Thanks for the link.......I do have the ability to edit the HTML on the page but not change it's extension. And wouldn't the server, in this case the 3rd party message board, have to be set up to run SSI?

Thanks anyways.....

Yes you would. What type of scripting do they allow on their servers? If they allow ASP you could set up a simple Access db to hold the banned IP addresses and then set up a validation script running in the background that would bump banned users to a warning message or whatever you want.

Maybe send an email to the provider, an IP ban would proabably be a good feature to have.

If you are clever enough and your ISP can do redirection you can run a script on a server set up at home that will bounce anyone with a banned IP to limbo.

But they could still access the board if they went directly to it. I dont think you can Use JS to say if If the IP=xxx.x.x.x then refresh to http://website.com/banned.html.

Not if you are able to set a cookie or a session variable on them. Dynamically assigned addresses are very hard to keep out anyway. A login screen in combination with an IP block is more effective, but nothing is 100%

Thats true that nothing works perfectly because they can renew their IP and create a different account but at some point hopefully they will decide to give up.
