lost sound, video & mouse, & non responding IE
About a month ago, I lost sound, video and mouse. I was able to get video and mouse back. Not really sure how i got mouse back but I did. I reinstalled the video driver from my restore disk and am no longer having problems with it. I was able on 2 occasions to get sound back by installing sound driver from restore disk. However, when I shut down and then restart later, the sound was gone again. Crystal CS4281 PCI Audio is listed under Sound, video and game controllers in my device manager. I am now also receiving an error message when trying to run a new game- "The DDRAW.DLL file cannot start. Check the file to determine the problem." I went to Microsoft and installed DirectX, but that didn't help. Also having trouble with IE non-responding. This happens when entering IE for first time after start up, I can clt-alt-del and end task to get out, then re-enter IE with no problems until I shut down and log back in. I have had an ongoing problem with hanging at shutdown, but I can restart and then shut down without any problem. Don't know if this is associated with other problems, thought I should mention it. My computer is an emachines 533i, Windows 98SE, all original components. Thanks.

If using IE 6.0, search for the file ie6setup.exe (Start->Find-Files and Folders, type ie6setup.exe, look in C:, including subfolders). Once found, double click on it and follow the instructions on screen to install all components.

If the issue persists, download Hijackhis (Save this program in its own folder, ie: C:\HJT):

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Run a Scan and save the log. A Notepad document will be produced. Copy and paste its contents in a reply here.

I installed the components as you suggested. When the computer restarted after the installation I got 2 error msgs. The 1st was an illegal operation/program shutdown msg, Rundll32 was in the upper left corner of the the window. Then I got this msg "C:]WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mstime.dll" The file may not have been installed or it has been corrupted. I haven't had any problem in this session with IE non responding.

I'm not sure what scan you want me to run, I'm not seeing where scandisk gives me the option of saving the log. Thanks for your help.

The Scan I referred to in the reply is a Hijackthis Scan.

MStime.dll is the Microsoft (R) Timed Interactive Multimedia Extension. Either the file is corrupted in the installation files, or Spy and Adware is preventing the ie6setup from installing this file. This is the reason I asked you to download Hijackthis and perform a scan (HJT scan). The HJT scan will give us a picture of your running processes and we may be able to identify if there is a bug preventing IE to work efficiently.

There are no threats in the log.

I suggest you extarct Rundll32.exe from your Cabs into the C:\Windows Folder. If that does not resolve the problem, download and reinstall Internet Explorer.

To extract Rundll32.exe run SFC and select Extrat one file rom the installation Disk. select the location of the CABS (Usually C:\Windows\Options\Cabs or the Win98 folder in the Installation CD) as the souce (Extract from) and the C:\Windows as the target (Save in). You may be asked for a backup, select Yes.

If that does not resolve the issue, download IE 6.0 and reinstall:

I tried extracting the file with no luck, reinstalling IE 6.0 didn't work either. IE is still non-responding when first connecting, but works just fine after that. Is my no-sound problem related to this, or a separate issue?

It could be. You must resolve the IE issue first. Delete all temporary files from your computer and attempt again to download and reinstall IE 6.0 SP1. To do this go to Start->Find->Files and folders. Search for the following strings and delete all files and folders found:

*.tmp
C:\Temp\*.*
C:\Windows\Temp\*.*

All files and folders deleted will be sent to the Recycle Bin. Empty your Recycle Bin and attempt to download and reinstall IE 6.0 SP1 after a restart. If unable to install, let us know the error message if any, or gives us some feedback.

You can also install Windows Installer prior to the IE 6.0 SP1:

Deleted all temporary files, restarted and attempted Windows Installer, got this error: "The specified service already exists."

Then reinstalled IE 6.0 SP1, got the same error message as post #3 at restart: rundll32 and mstime.dll

I am enclosing a zip file with the MStime.dll. Save this .zip file anywhere in your computer and extract to C:\Windows\System. Prior to extracting this file, search for any copy of this file in the computer and move it to a safe place as a backup.

After extracting this file run the following command as to re-register the same.:

REGSVR32.EXE Mstime.dll

Restart the computer.

Lets see if after having this file in place things improve.

After the run command I got this error msg; LoadLibrary("Mstime.dll")failed. GetLastError returns 0x00000485.

Did I do something wrong?

It is possible that the system is not identifying the file due to its path. Try this command:

REGSVR32.EXE C:\Windows\System\Mstime.dll

I believe the issues in your computer is due to a corrupted installation of IE.

Here is another option:

Run Regedit and locate the following keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}

On each of these keys, look at the right pane, right-click the IsInstalled (REG_DWORD) value, and then click Modify. Change the value data from 1 to 0, and then click OK. Quit Registry Editor, then re-install Internet Explorer 6.

I think you solved the IE problem. The first option gave the same error msg (Mstime.dll) failed.

Worked the 2nd option, got no error msg's at restart and IE seems to be running fine now. Even went into my mail account which IE previously would always get hung up on. I still have the sound issue and ddraw.dll problem, any advice for fixing this would be appreciated. Thank you for your help with this and your patience with my inexperience.

Now that IE seems to be in place, download DirectX and aftewards reload your sound drivers.

I downloaded DirectX, after the restart, I got illegal operation/program shut down msg, dxdllreg was in the upper left corner. I also seem to have lost the D:drive- D:\ is not accessible. The device is not ready. And IE is non-responding again this morning.
