Secon Hand CPU
Hi every one, first post on here. Just wondering what your thoughts are, on buying a second hand CPU.

Cheers

What amount of warranty does the seller provide?

I can't do that because it's on the other side of Australia, he said it's in excellent condition about 12 month old he's said he's upgraded.

What are the specs of the CPU? Is it much better than your current one?
Also, as win2kpro said, what warranty do they offer? Is it a company or an individual selling it?

No warranty/individual selling.

I have a Pent 4 3Ghz with an Asrock board and the board will support a core2 Duo E6700 New if you can get one is about $300 and I can pick this one up for about $140.

Personally, I wouldn't even consider buying that processor without at least a 7 day warranty so I could install and test it.

The processor may have been overclocked and possibly damaged.

So basically what you're saying is that you wouldn't put in any second hand CPU

No, I didn't say that. I said I would want at least 7 days to install and test the processor. Actually, 3 days from the date of delivery would be sufficient.

If a processor is going to present problems you should know it right away, however you at least need time to install the unit and run it for a few hours.

Read my specs. Would you buy a used processor from me? I am a very careful overclocker but I would never sell one of my old processors. I have given a few away.

Ask him if he has ever overclocked it? Or better yet, ask him if it will do 200 mhz over stock speed. If he says yes, don't buy it.

I have bought several CPUs used from individuals, mostly on ebay (wonderful place, hmmm......). To date I have not had a problem. Curiiously, the only prob I ever had was a CPU I ordered from over the pond which never arrived, and the seller didnt have a proof of posting. Fortunately I got a refund through ebay, so if you can get a seller that gives an enforcable warranty ( verbal ones tend to be as goos as the paper they are written on) its probably worth a look
