Doublespace & Drivespace Usefulness?
Hi Folks,

I saw this posted in a PC magazine. Can someone help me accomplish this task with step-by-step instructions? What are the advantages by doing this?

"Nobody uses the disk compression utility DoubleSpace or its latter-day replacement, DriveSpace, anymore. Hard drives of immense capacity have become so affordable that it's foolish to do so. But by default, either Dblspace.bin or Drvspace.bin loads into memory when Windows starts. You can prevent this by simply deleting those files from both the root directory and the C:\Windows\Command folder."

Thanks for your help.

this is rather technical stuff davidrs and needs to be done through system editor "sysedit".
the only thing you will be doing of note is speeding your boot up by a few seconds....seriously i would leave alone until youve read up on the subject.

Davidrs:

Disk compression is not needed and should not be used. Do the following:

1. Go into Add/Remove Programs - Windows Setup and uncheck and uninstall Disk Compression.

2. Go into MSDOS.SYS and add or edit these entries to look like this:

DrvSpace=0
DblSpace=0

(Note: You will have to right-click the file, click Properties, uncheck Read Only, then click Apply - OK before you can make the change. Save the change afterwards, then go back in the file and recheck Read Only)

3. Go into Find - Files And Folders and bring up and delete the following files - if they exist:

Drvspace.bin
Dblspace.bin

Hi- And drive compression loading is one thing can stop or mess up a Restore, with a Compaq and HP computer! They have directions found at the support for these computers that has directions to disable Drvspace and Dblspace and other things prior to running a Restore after a format- the same situation lots of people find themselves in when the Restore will not run from Windows. Deleting these as above will be helpful to anyone using the Restore type CDs I think. Thanks for the good explanation, Frank and Steve!
