I have a laptop that I use a lot for business, but I don't have any decent way of backing up data. I also have a desktop with CDRW. Both have USB ports and the laptop also has an infrared port which I use for transferring files to other laptops. Does anyone know a smart trick for transfering files from the laptop to the desktop so that I can make a backup on CD? The data file size is in the region of 200Mb.

For about $15.00 you can pick up a USB networking cable, which is a USB cord, but it goes between two computers, and it has a chip with firmware built into it, so you can't use any old usb cable. You can transfer files between the computers that way, also look into taking advantage of Windows' built in "Briefcase" feature.
