Computer has better hardware than Game Consoles, but why worse performance?
Hi guys. I'm just wondering why, even though my computer is much better than a Nintendo 64 and even a PS2, I get worse performance from games. Here are the specs for an N64 and a PS2 --

N64 -- http://www.gamedude.com/n64spec.html

PS2 -- http://www.free-game.com/Playstation...2specs.Com.htm

Now, my specs are: 566 MHZ Celeron, 320MB PC100, 64MB GeForce2, Win98, ESS Audio (onboard, crappy).

So, compared to the consoles, my PC is much better.

So, even though the hardware on game consoles is much worse than on modern, moderately priced computer hardware, I am getting a much worse performance. I mean, I got a "Goldeneye" N64 ROM and I played it on "Project 64", an emulator, and it played horribly. But when I played it on my N64, it looks a little better, and the sound is very good and it doesn't slow down like it does on my computer.

And GTA3 plays ok on my computer, but not as good as it would on the game console. And I am afraid that when GTA:VC comes out for PC, it won't play very well on my computer.

Ok, now, I thought that, obviously, Windows itself takes up a certain amount of RAM, etc., but I mean, come on, I have 320MB, and after Windows 98 takes some of it, there's plenty left! So, it shouldn't be a problem.

Ok, thanks. Should be an interesting topic, no ?!

I think its because those platforms were designed especially for gaming. Nothing else. Nothin extra just gaming.

Yea, yea. Like, you mean, that they don't load an operating system, etc? Could you explain this in more detail? I think I know what you mean, but I just want to understand so I can stop getting stressed out.

I don't really know, its just something I thought of. I mean it doesn't have an OS, it doesn't have a web browser, calculator, email client, word processor etc. It just has what it needs to play games, because thats all its intended to be used for.
