For those you who want to use
Sun Java2 Runtime Environment 1.4.1.01 and want to permanently remove Microsoft Java Virtual Machine 5.00.3809(or older versions) from your computer, these are the steps to follow, which work with ALL Windows versions:
1. Click Start - Run, type in the following exactly(including a single space after 32 and after Section), then click OK:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,Uninstall
Ignore the warning that appears, click Yes, allow the uninstall to proceed, then reboot when prompted to.
2. After your computer restarts, click Start - Find - Files And Folders, highlight the hard drive to look in, type in C:\WINDOWS, then allow the list of folders and files to appear(or you can access the Windows folder via Windows Explorer in the start menu).
3. Locate the Java folder, right-click it, then click Delete - Yes.
4. Locate the INF folder, right-click it, then click Open. Look for the following 2 files:
java.inf
java.pnf
If they are there, right-click each one, then click Delete - Yes.
5. Locate the System folder(95, 98, ME) or System32 folder(XP), right-click it, then click Open. Look for the following 2 files:
jview.exe
wjview.exe
If they are there, right-click each one, then click Delete - Yes.
6. While you are still in Find - Files And Folders, type in JAVAVM.DLL, then attempt to bring up and see if the file is still there. If it is, right-click it, then click Delete - Yes.
7. Click Start - Run, type in REGEDIT, then click OK. This will open the registry editor window. Click the + in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - Software - Microsoft - Internet Explorer - Advanced Options. Locate the Java_VM folder, right-click it, then click Delete - Yes. Reboot your computer.
8. After your computer restarts, open an Internet Explorer window. Click Tools - Internet Options - Advanced(tab). Scroll down to the Java section. Microsoft Java Virtual Machine should no longer be listed. If you have already installed Java Sun2, it should be listed and checked. If it is listed and not checked, check it, then click Apply - OK.
