Question Leave PC ON or OFF
Have had differing opinions about whether to leave PC running or to shutdown when not in use. Would welcome more input ref this.

Many thanks Lurker1 for your prompt response, I wasn't aware of how much input was generated by past forums and I thank you indeed for directing me to it. it would seem however I am going out the same door I came in as opinion seems to be divided either way. I am reassured to learn that I don't seem to be harming my hardware by shutting down the system at night.
I must endorse the point made about software benefiting by shutting down the system at intervals as I am using Win98se.

Many Thanks,

Jonuck

One further point (and suggestion) that I don't think has been made yet:

My system is on 24/7, but I restart Windows several times a day, and I do a cold boot at least every third day. That way, I don't get the heating/cooling effect, but the system is refreshed periodically.

Mileage may vary...this is just what seems to work best for me.

Hi brushmaster1,
Apologies for delay in responding, had problem with mice as in (mouse) now resolved. Your points are noted and I have adopted a regimen much the same as yours for future use. Many thanks for input. Great Forum.

My system is on 24/7 except when I need to leave home for an extended period of time. IE vacation. I wouldn't leave it on if I knew I was going to be gone for longer than three days. This way at least I can hear if I have a fan thats failing. It's ran for over 3 years straight without ever being rebooted unless I go on vacation(once a year) , or change or add a device to it, about once a month. My machine at work has been running for over a year with no reboots.

Your observations are well noted gotrootdude and I am begining to realise that modern computer hardware is more robust than I have previously thought I shall in future leave my system on unless like you I am away from home for an extended period.
