When Windows XP launched nearly two years ago, it was a significant departure from its older brethren. Because of the changes that Windows XP brought with it (mostly positive in my opinion), some older games and programs no longer worked properly or at all with Windows XP.
Enter the Windows Compatibility mode. This tool allows users to have their troublesome computer programs 'think' they are still running under Windows 95 or 98. Here's how to use it:
Right–click the icon of the program that you want to fix (either on the desktop or your Start menu).
Click Properties.
Click the Compatibility tab.
Click "Run this program in compatibility mode" and select one of the following options: Windows 95, Windows 98 /Me or Windows NT 4 (I suggest trying the Win 98 option first)
Under Display settings, check the mode that you think is necessary for the program to work correctly: Run in 256 colors, Run in 640 X 480 screen resolution , and/or Disable visual themes. (These settings usually need to be used for older games)
Click Apply.
Click Ok.
