The invisible picture
For HTML code:Ran across this interesting tip: The invisible picture can be used to make blank space in your text the exact size you want, instead of using the special-space character .By using a 1 pixel gif you can make the space any size you want.

I've seen a lot of sites use spacers to help "perfect" the layout. I personally don't like it, because you never know what resolution your visitor will have and it increases the amount of time your page needs to load(not much but a little).
