open IE in explorer view
If you usually work with the Internet and files on your hard disk at the same time, you should consider running Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 in the Explorer view. This view displays your desktop (My Computer, etc.) in the left pane, and your Web page in the right pane.

To start Microsoft Internet Explorer in Explorer view, right-click the SHORTCUT that you use to run IE and choose Properties. Click the Shortcut tab and then click in the Target entry box. Press End to move to the end of the existing line and then press the Spacebar. Now, type in -e

Click OK to save your addition and close the dialog box. From this point on, Microsoft Internet Explorer will open in Explorer view.

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -e

Right click shortcut again - properties - just remove the -e..

I've just done that and it removes the explorer pane...all back to normal...

Or you can leave it as it is and close the folder with the X when you don't need it showing...

I prefer the explorer view. One of the first things I do after an install is edit my reg so it always open in explorer view no matter what you click on.
Start regedit and go to HKEY_CLASES_ROOT/FOLDER/shell/open/ddeexec
change the default entry from [ViewFolder("%l", %I, %S)] to [ExploreFolder("%l", %I, %S)]
