Ad-Aware Question
Hi--

I'm new to this forum. I read the Ref Guide for Ad-Aware, which I've been using for a while in a mostly clueless manner--just running Smart Scan and deleting whatever objects showed up.

After reading the Guide I just ran the Custom Scan according to the instructions. I deleted all the objects found.

I'm baffled by the "Important Decision" note about posting my logfile and the issue of "unsure about what to remove." I've been operating on the assumption that it is in my interest to remove all the objects Ad-Aware finds. So far there have been no adverse consequences in doing this.

Is there some reason I might not want to remove some of the objects Ad-Aware finds? Which ones? Why?

Thanks

Well, for one, sometimes certain legal programs run off of spyware, and if you uninstall it the program stops working. if you dont have any of this type of program though then delete them all. HJT should be posted though.

Sometimes removing all the objects Ad-Aware finds can also cause loss of internet access, which a few people experience when getting rid of New.net

Since you have noticed no adverse consequences, you are likely safe. AdAware gives the warnings simply to alert you. The stuff it removes goes into a quarantine file, which can be restored. If, on the remote chance, your clean-up did cause a problem, you could recover from it by restoring the last quarantine file.

You are very likely safe.

Thanks for the prompt replies.

Big-K--

What is HJT? Where should I post it?

Thanks again.

"HJT" stands for "HiJack This". It is a program that analysis what is installed and running on your machine, and then allows you to "fix" things that you do not want on your computer. It is often used by people whose machines are not acting properly due to unwanted malware they have acquired.

Many people run HJ-T to get a log of what is on their machine, and then post that log in the Security forum for an expert to interpret. You may want to browse the Security forum to see what the logs look like, and how people give advice based upon the logs.

HJ-T is free, get it here:

Many thanks. I've taken your advice.
