It finally sunk in!
I just recoverd over 2gigs of hdd space on my xp he system by removing all but the most recent System Restore point,which I know is a good one! Also on my w95 pute I just deleted 11k files and got almost 300mb back! [I only had 450 left on a 1.8gig hdd}

I can't believe I'm so dense! I knew that Content IE5 under temporary internet files[w95] had all this garbage but when I deleted all temp int files it didn't take much away. You guessed it I didn't check the box to delete "all offline content"! Yes indeed that's where they've been all this time just accumulating and slowing down my V,disc, defrag scans and heaven knows what else! Oh yeah, seen many times that it was recommended to ck it,never gave it a thought!

It's now 3:30 am, but I'm happy! even though I know I gotta get a life and stop this even if I am retired!
The Mrs is snoring and hasn't missed me yet so I gotta sneak off to bed!. nite!

bassetman,
I did it and got rid of 11k + files and regained about 300mb of space just by checking the box in internet explorer to delete'all off line content'. You get that option when you click delete all internet temp files in properties of IE. [you probably knew that] but just an FYI. Ck C before and after for free space. Also in win explorer, windows then IE, hit properties and note the number of files. All those files get scanned for V,scandisc, and defrag and etc etc. Delete them and mucho time, space and etc saved.

For those who have not done it in years it came really make a difference. [me for one] Good luck!

Here's another tid-bit for making more room. Not sure if it will work on all OS's, but no problems with mine (XP HOME)

((QUOTE)) Kim Komando News Letter (unknown issue)

$NTUNINSTALL files reside in your Windows folder. (If you have
Windows 2000, they are in your WINNT folder.) I have 45 on my computer,
and they are monsters. I found one that was 237 MB!

These are the uninstallation files for Microsoft's updates and service
packs. This would seem to say that there have been a lot of updates.
But consider this: Not all updates can be uninstalled. So I presumably
have had many more updates than 45.

You can remove the files if you want. Just delete them. But keep
in mind that updates sometimes cause problems. If you have these files,
you can remove troublesome updates through Add or Remove Programs in
Control Panel.

However, if the updates aren't causing you problems now, they probably
won't in the future. So you're likely safe if you get rid of these
space hogs.

But how do you get rid of files you can't see ?

In Temp Internet Files, I deleted all offline content, I checked 'show all files' and 'show all hidden files', I see NOTHING yet when I look at the Properties of that folder, it says I have over 500 files and 350MB in use..........

What OS?
The 500 files isn't that bad[not good!] but the 350mb, well that's something else!!
I assume you deleted temp internet files from the IE icon?= right click on IE icon on desktop{if that's where you have it} click properties, then delete files, you then get another prompt box which will have a blank box you can check to delete "all off line content', then click ok. What folder are you clicking on and where, that you get the file and mb amount? Deleting directly from the folder won't do it, you have to do it from the IE properties box!!!

On the IE, there is also a "settings" button, click on that and check to see how much space you have allocated for these files. It has a slider so you can adjust amts. Be carefull not to go too low as it can affect your net surfing and dump files as you need them? I have mine set at 114mb. Good or bad don't know but I had it set real low one time and caused problems in my stock screens on Yahoo.

You might want to run IE repair and scandisk to see if there is a problem also reboot might correct. You shouldn't have 350mb still in Content IE after cleaning up! But again do it from IE properties!

Post back and let us know results! Thanks

IAAvaGent, That is exactly what I do, and how I do it, and to then go look at the properties, it says I have all this space in use......

p.s. it's with both Win98 and Win2K

Fredman, I really don't know what to tell ya!

Why you would still have 350mb and 500 files in the temp internet files folder is beyond me! Right at this moment I only have 9.7mb but 1100 + files in temp internet files folder which includes Content IE and I havn't deleted for about a week! However prior to finally deleting all off line content and temp int.files I had 11000+ files and 70mb. However when I did it my free space on C jumped from 400 mb to almost 800mb. Go figure! Just getting rid of 11000 files made me happy!

Read this thread http://forums.techguy.org/showthread...hreadid=200372 and then decide what you want to do. You may wish to start a new thread or post again in the one above or wait to see if someone can direct you in this thread.

Sorry I don't know what to tell ya esp. since you did it the same way I did! Good Luck!

Wow! I have Norton SystemWorks with comes with Fast and Safe Cleanup. It is a utility that is included. I use it most of the time now because it is what it says, FAST and SAFE! However, I have also always deleted all temporary internet files plus offline files because of the simple fact that they are supposed to be temporary anyway. Just look at the name. I also used to delete cookies the manual way. Unfortunately, this became a problem because it would delete session cookies and personal settings cookies (the ones that store your password and such) while also deleting the bad ones. ONe thing I like about Norton's Fast and Safe Cleanup is that it makes sure that the session cookies don't get deleted. But way back then when I had Windows 95 or 98 (on two separate computers) I would always delete them. I remember having this habit from a very early age. I was always quite religious about it due to saving precious hard drive space on those dinky 1 gigabyte and 4 gigabyte hard drives. Needless to say, I have always been a power user.

Holly,
What you say is true, however what we're talking about is cleaning up junk beyond what Norton's fast and safe clean up will do.
Granted some suggestions aren't all that safe, but if you're carefull you'll get rid of a lot of junk that Norton won't touch or leaves it up to you as to what goes and what stays.

It's some of the questionable junk that we're posting about on this site. The "what if" you delete ones.
Also many don't and won't use Norton utilities. I have it on one pute but not on another! In the past I have gotten a green light from Norton to delete a file only to have to retrive it later.{I back up all that goes into recycle bin and note where it came from, burned too many times!} Take care!
