Troubleshooting - Dying CMOS Battery After going through this twice now, in the last 2 years I thought that I would document the symptoms. At least this time, I clued in a little faster than the 4-5 days I spent last time.
The symptoms are hangs on various programs, on a system that has been extremely stable and with no recent installs/uninstalls.
In my case, Defrag (part way), Norton AV (part way), Shutdown and Shutdown > Restart (both as soon as the screen is presented), HJT (removing items), Control Panel > System > Device Manager and a couple of times as I was running multiple apps and doing a task switch via Alt-tab.
One symptom that lead me on a wild goosechase, as I was troubleshooting what I thought were disk problems, were restarts happening with Scandisk and Norton Disk Doctor. "Knowing" that I had nothing active in the background, led me to believe I had a virus and/or spyware! But, this again was caused by the battery.
And the one that finally clued me! After you enter the Bios at boot time, it hangs.
And, as soon as the battery is replaced all these disappear.
BTW through all of this, the clock kept time just fine.
