smash the pop ups
Everyone gets pop ups at their favorite websites, the worse one for me is "media fast click" I always wanted a way to annihilate them, something specific for mediafastclick, so I played around with the keyboard as they pop up,

Here's what I discovered after experimenting on a couple websites I always go to:

As soon as you go to the website, hold down the 'ENTER' key, wait till you see 'done' , no pop ups, it's as simple as that,

Did I discover this by accident or is this well known,

It has worked at every site I've gone too

Give it a try and see if it works,

Interesting. I use MyIE2 for my web browser, and I never get pop-ups. But the next time I use IE6, I'll give your hint a try.

By the way, when Micrsoft puts out its next major service pack in a couple of months, it is supposed to include a pop-up blocker in Internet Explorer.

I'd be afraid of doing this. What if a window did sneak through and your ENTER keystroke told it "Sure, I would love to have Gator installed"?

Download PopupStopper from http://www.panicware.com

My Google toolbar blocks all popups nicely.

THOEY,

In case your read this, as stated by Hotskates Google Toolbar, and Avantbrowser (simlar to MYIE2) will stop nearly all popups. As regards things like Gator - have you you checked your IE Settings ? Go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced - look under the heading 'Browsing' for the two boxes marked 'Enable Install on Demand' ... and make sure they are not ticked. This will block most such insidious practices.

If in doubt then start using Spywareblaster from here :

http://www.wilderssecurity.com/spywareblaster.html

Once installed on your comp. - click the Online feature and get the latest definitions. It will then place 'kill bits' on your pc to stop such garbage installing. As an added advantage - it does not need to be running to remain effective - merely updated with each new set of definitions.

Furthermore if you have a Firewall running, most 'phone home' junk will be detected as soon as it tries to do so - allowing you to say 'no' - then run Spybot / or Adaware and delete the offending articles.

Thoey,
That was my main concern, are you going to 'activate' something you don't want, but I don't think holding it down is processing the 'enter' command that way, I think it's blocking rather than executing an 'acceptance' command,

I tested your exact concern by going to those websites that constantly load the 'shockwave players' where you do get the pop up to install it, , , holding down the enter key did not begin saving a download or even opening a folder for one,

And even more interesting, the reverse might be true, that is, it might actually be blocking the 'drive by' or 'hook me up with more spyware' ,

It's definitely untested in all those regards, but interesting,

RSM and others, I currently run Adaware, Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard, a virus scan and PopupBlocker. I updately these and run them at least weekly. I don't have any problems (knock on wood).

Star, interesting theory, but I would still be a little leary. I have learned to don't trust anyone. Well, except for the Guru's here...

THoey,

What the H3ll - go for it and be reckless download whatever you want .... at least you know where to come if / when you download a 'nasty'

As regards your profile photo - I can only state that I share a house with two Germans, and each of them goes home each month to bring back several hundred friends (500 ml variety).

Needless to say most do not survive the climate here in Britain - and must therefore in turn, be replaced.

Have a good weekend.
