If you just want the files, Take the hard drive out and put it in another comp as a slave.

It might start up in Safe Mode

When you start it up or restart, try the F5 key or F8 key, tap it several times during first part of boot. The CTRL key can also work, you have to press and Hold it down while starting up...

If you get the startup menu, select Safe Mode and hit Enter.

The video is lousy but it is normal...drivers do not load.

You can copy things to floppy but CD drive does not normally work in SM. You can of course install an old hard drive as a Slave drive to copy things to.

As person above posted, it might be easiest to put the drive into another computer as a Slave to copy things from. You can infect that machine if you have certain things so be careful. It should probably be scanned well first by the antivirus program installed on the computer you place the drive into.

Try this......... At the first boot-up sound press the Esc key ,

Don't know if it will work for you but it's worth a try.

It used to work for me on my old NEC / W95.

good luck,

cu Frank.

maybe i can help. try to format a diskette in another computer with the /s option. this will create a bootable disk. use this disk to boot your computer, and you will be able to access your computer and its files.

Thanks, teroy, I will try it sometime today...by diskette I assume you mean a regular floppy (?), ..I don't know what the "/s" option is yet, but assume I will see it when I do the formatting?..This sounds plain and promising, thanks, I will report back. berbear.

yes, a diskette is a floppy.

the /s option is to make your floppy a bootable disk

a more detailed step would be:

start up a good pc. in windows 95/98, in the START button, then programs, there is an option MS DOS Prompt, click this option. The DOS screen will come up. on the C:\> prompt, type FORMAT A:/s this will format your floppy disk and transfer system files to it to make it bootable. use this floppy to boot your computer
