Arrow Using I.E.6 and Puzzled by the Settings?
Hello,

If there is a better site for all the answers to setting-up Internet Explorer 6 then I haven't found it:

http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/ie6/index.shtml

And if anyone knows of a similar site for Outlook Express 6 and its settings please post in this thread.

Thanks.

Hello hewee,

Yes, I can see they are not bad for I.E.6 but remember its Outlook Express I would like to see a link to.

Cheers, hewee, thanks for responding.

Hello hewee,

Thanks but I had already searched for exactly that. Nothing there about the Options in Outlook Express 6 (i.e Tools|Options|General and Read etc.). No problem, hewee, I just find MS use of terminology difficult. For example what does this mean, in Tools|Options|Read >click on fonts> Proportional font = ? and Fixed-width font =?.

What is a proportional font and a fixed-width font?

Cheers.

Hello hewee,

And good morning,

That's a good site too. So now we have two excellent ones - Internet Explorer 6 Settings:

http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/ie6/index.shtml

and

http://www.tpsconsulting.com/tips4.htm

and now we just need the Outlook Express 6 one (or two)!

Cheers, hewee.

Or better yet just set the setting up HIGH for IE and use it only for MS Updates and only when you have to, to get to some sites and stop using Outlook.
That is the best way to keep things saver.

Thanks for those, Ratboy.

I see that 'Fixed-width' font (Options|Read tab |Fonts in O.E.6) is the same as the 'Fixed-pitch' definition in webopedia.

Putting that together helps me understand how to make my choices for the font I wish to appear as Plain Text, both in messages received (Inbox) if that is chosen ('Read all messages in plain text'), and how my composed messages will appear as I type them if I choose to 'create' them in 'plain text' (Format/Plain Text - click-on).

Since neither proportional-fonts nor fixed-width fonts can be unselected I have one last unanswered explanation in mind. What determines the final font type?

I don't know for sure what determines the final font type. I can only assume that it is determined by the font type the sender uses.

From the Inside Outlook Express page:

Quote:
How do I view messages using a Fixed-width font?

To view the current message using a Fixed-width font, click View| Text Size| Fixed. The Fixed-font will be used only for that message, and will be forgotten when you close the message. To view all messages using a Fixed-width font, go to Tools| Options| Read| Fonts, and in the "Proportional font" list, select a Fixed-width font.
You should be able to do the same to view Proprotional Fonts instead.

Hi, Ratboy,

You are an assiduous researcher. I am grateful for that in you.The 'Inside Outlook Express' is a great site.

It, however, raises more questions in me! Since in my 'View' (i.e in Outlook Express) that option is grayed-out. I shall have to jiggle settings to see what brings it back as an option. And after so doing:

In Tools|Options|Read and in Fonts I have selected Proportional font 'Verdana' and Fixed-width font Lucida Console. My e-mails in and my compositions look identical. Checking the Fonts it is Lucida Console. Which tells me the Verdana setting will only apply if that choice is made in View and in a message received - though why one would want to change the font in a message incoming when one has already specified in Tools|Options|Read that one wants all messages to be read in plain text just eludes me at the moment!

But I feel, even think, with your prompting, Ratboy, I have made progress.

My thanks, and best wishes for the holidays.

PS. Verdana (my proportional font choice) looks (in Fonts) to be identical to Lucida Console. More to come, here, I guess!!

Thumbs up I.E.6 Settings.
Hello,

In the post with which I began this thread I suggested the following site:

http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/ie6/index.shtml

as the "best site". Having followed my own advice, and it took some time, I found that the net result was, no doubt, very secure browsing. I, however, couldn't 'live' with the recommended settings. There were, quite simply, too many prompts. My apologies to those who followed the recommended settings.

Instead I suggest this site, which is full of sound advice, and whose author is a a regularly appearing and contributing member of this forum, username flavallee Frank, his name, and his website:

http://9337387.home.icq.com/index.html

and the I.E settings are located here:

http://9337387.home.icq.com/main14.html

Frank will answer any questions you may have - and with alacrity.
