I have just started to learn, work and play with computers. I have Windows XP. My friend showed me some forums and chat rooms and the basics to maneuver the web and do searches (that is how I found your forum). I am a very curious person, I like to know how things work and are done. I can tell I will be very confused with computers while learning about them. One of my first questions is can I stay on-line without having a land phone, but having a cell phone? Is there free access to on-line? I have free email through yahoo. Now about chat rooms. I know that you can press the ignore button when someone is being rude or ugly. But i noticed that some people take it a step further and boot the person out of the room. It is driving me crazy that i can't figure out what they are doing to boot someone out. Any help in answering my question will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, pamela

Thumbs up Welcome.
Hello Pamela,

And welcome to TSG (TechSupportGuy - and gals of course).

We all began, just as you are doing, wanting to know as much as we could in as short a time as possible.

For some of us learning can be frustrating to begin with but over time, and with help, we actually learn the most important thing - which is the process never ends.

After four years on-line I have to say I cannot answer your first question but somebody will. In fact I cannot answer any of your questions.

Again somebody will.

Best wishes.

Pamela
Netzero offers free internet dialup access if you use the internet less than 10 hours a month.
Verizon is supposed to have an adapter to connect a laptop to a cell phone, I have inquired about it, they said they did, but i haven't tried it.
I don't spend much time in chat rooms, but I think to boot someone out you would need to be a moderator or owner of the room.

Pamela,

You are doing everything right.

I hope your friend recommended some protection against viruses and malware. And obtaining the regular updates from the Windows Updates site. You will have noticed we have a specific forum for Windows XP and problems with that operating system (OS). Problems and advice.

Best wishes.

Re Chatrooms
Jack is right, whoever sets up the chatroom is the admin and they have extra commands ie the abilty to boot and ban,set topic, how many people to allow in the chatroom etc, some chat clients also allow the admin to have moderators to help oversee the chatroom and they can boot and ban also. There are also various add ons for some chatroom clients that can auto boot/ban ie for swearing spamming etc, hope that helps
