Solved: Firefox and tabs
How can I get Firefox to open a link that is clicked into a new tab instead of a whole new browser. I've gone to options, advanced and clicked and unclicked "open new window" "new tab is most recent window" and "the most recent tab/window" but each time it launces an whole new browser.

Hi jfriedlund

Right click on the link and select Open in new tab

I have not seen any other options for this either, hopefully someone will come along who does know.

Right clicking on the link does not offer a context menu?

No, when I right click on a link I get two options, bookmark this link or copy link location. I'm doing this from a link in an email, I see if I right click on link here in the forum I do get the option of opening in a new window or a new tab, why would that be?

If you have a three button mouse or one with a scroll wheel, try putting the cursor over the link and press that middle button or wheel.
I think that's what you want.

I think this is the answer...
Go here to download (install) a Firefox extension called QuickTabPrefToggle. It will add a toggle button for single window mode so you can toggle between two settings. Also gives easy access to the new hidden Firefox Tab Browsing prefs. Basically, it allows you to set your preferences about whether to open a new page in a tab or a window. It makes allowances for popups, etc.

Once installed, click Tools >Extensions . Highlight QuickTabPrefToggle and click "Options." Make your selections for the various types of links you'll be working with. It will allow ALL links to open in a single page or your can set it to other preferences.

Please let me know if it works for you. If so, mark your thread "Solved" using the Thread Tools.

TabBrowser Preferences might be a more useful extension.

I guess the original poster can better make that decision. Now there's a choice...

Am I missing something here?
I get FireFox to open such a link by putting the cursor over the link and pressing the scrollwheel on my Logitech mouse( it is also a button).
I've installed no extensions for tabs and set tabbed browsing in options as such:

I have version 1.0.1 but it hasn't made a difference which version I've had, it's always been there and I've NEVER downloaded an extension for it...but I've always had the ability to open in tab. The screen shot is how it look, Liz

Thanks for all of your help and suggestions, I downloaded the tab extension and it works just like I want it to! Now I'll try and figure out how to make this thread read "solved"!
