Solved: Recomended Books, Mags. about WinXP?
Hello,

I have recently installed WinXP home and I like it so far. I was wondering if there is a good book or magazine about XP for intermediate users. I was looking for tweaking XP a bit, you know speeding it up and finding out other tricks and tips. There are alot of books out there about XP ( whew, are there ever ! ).

Have you all come across one that you refer to often. Would one of the "DUMMIES" type books suit my purpose?

Thanks.

I enjoyed _Dan Gookin's Naked Windows XP_, which is, admittedly, 3 yrs old now. It details how you can start apps in different ways, utilize the Start Panel and Quick Launch bar, icons, Windows Media Player, tweaking Internet Explorer, using the address book and Task Manager, etc. It's mainly how to tweak XP to work the way you want - not advanced but handy for personalizing things.

For starters TSG XP section {if you don't mind lots of thread reading}. Also this is a good XP Forum, http://www.xpforum.co.uk/forum/index.php You have to register to post. Google WINXP,WXP or something and you will come up with lots. Also PC Magazine site. There are so many out there. I found many via TSG XP threads, but as I said it's a lot of reading. Try searching TSG, ie XP Mag or something similar and see what comes up. Good Luck.

Here are two good books on hacking WinXP:
1) Hacking Windows XP by Steve Sinchak (author http://www.tweakxp.com)
2) Windows XP Hacks by Preston Gralla

Here are some XP tweak websites:

Thank you all for your replies.

I have now booked-marked all of those sites and am starting to work my way through them. You probably saved me about $25 on a computer book.

I also highly recommend Dan Gookin's (Naked Windows XP). Dan has been on my Top Ten 2004 Questions and Answers about Windows XP for the past 2 years at: http://upstatecomputerservices.com/custom2.html # 10

Microsoft has release the pre-beta version of Windows Longhorn. And the first public beta of Longhorn is scheduled for this summer for IT administrators. By the time your laptop dies, U might be really for Windows Longhorn..........

The blackviper.com site is 'under construction' and registered to Network Solutions - as its probably saying in various languages flipping by.

-- Tom

P.S. A couple of caps (capacitors) blew on my desktop Win98SE w/VIA board, and now I have a new system w/WinXP S2 - I do like the other sites you listed, but I think I was able to visit blackviper once or so, before the notification occured.

Try this one:

Microsoft Windows XP: The Official Magazine

Can be found here. Not sure if they sell it in the US. I've bought several of these and it's very good. Also comes with CD-ROMs and usually includes updates. Worth getting and keeping.
