I'm not sure if this is what you wanted to see.
However, it
can't be done with a "grabber" program (as you knew all along) because the Windows "Start Menu" closes as soon as you shift focus to the grabber's window. It had me puzzled till I remembered ....
Open the "Start Menu" to where you want and then ...
... Press the
PrtSc button. This places an image of the whole desktop into the clipboard.
Open your favorite graphics program which can save images in gif (or bmp or jpg ) format, and Paste.
Save the image and Presto!
