There are lots of 'tweaking' programs around, but the best way to ensure smooth running of your system, is to make sure it is clean. Programs running in the background can take up resources, thus slowing it down a lot.
Go to this link to get a CCleaner:
http://www.ccleaner.com/
and go to this one to get a reg cleaner:
http://www.download.com/TweakNow-Reg...-10262639.html

They will clean your system of unwanted stuff.

You could also be infected with a virus/trojan or full of spyware/malware.

Do you have an active, uptodate AV installed?
Do you regularly run programs like SpyBot or AdAware?

Did this slowness "just" start?

.

Ok, here's a tip for DSL customers...in my case Verizon DSL using a Westell 327 modem.

>>>Reboot your modem at least once per week!!<<<

...or at least if you are experiencing internet connection difficulties and slowdowns.

I had to call Verizon Customer Service yesterday morning.
For the past couple of days I was noticing very slow connections, failures
to connect to internet sites/links where everything had been operating
normally before that...speedy connections with 1580/358 download/upload
speeds...but something wasn't right...it was getting ugly.

Being virus, trojan, malware free, no other reasons for the slowdown could
be found. Before calling Verizon I did the usual cadre of Spybot, Ad-aware,
MS Anti-Spyware, AVG scan, etc. (you know the drill).

I was "reminded" by the csr to reboot the modem (I guess these are
instructions I should have remembered from the installation a year ago).

Anyhoo, after the reboot it was "all systems GO" and everything is working at optimum.

Just thought I'd pass this along.

Hi h3ng,

Simply means to go to the OFF/ON switch that should be on the back
of the modem...turn it OFF...wait 30 seconds...and turn it back ON again.
Like rebooting a computer, it refreshes all paths and connections.

(as a precaution I turn off my Computer also (shutdown) and then after
starting up the Modem, turn my computer back on).

Probably a good idea to make a call to your provider and ask them about
the feasibility and practicality of rebooting your particular unit.

btw...since rebooting mine the other day I've experienced NO difficulty or
trouble in connecting to Internet sites....optimum speeds realized.
So, in my case at least, it's what worked for me.
