I'm using Internet Explorer (IE) 5.5 and I have a question on how to mess around with whats in the "favorites" folder. All I want to have in that folder is my bookmarked sites but for some reason, every time I log onto the internet, a "Links" file is in there. I don't want it in there so I delete it. But every time I add a new bookmark or get back on the net, it adds itself back into my "favorites" folder. Its appaling how annoying it is because I don't even use it. So what I'm trying to ask is does anyone know how to get rid of it, PERMANETLY. That means that it'll never add itself to the "favorites" folder whenever I add bookmarks or get on the net. Anyone that might know, thank you ahead of time for the help.

Download and install the latest version of tweakui from here. http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstati.../NTTweakUI.asp
Then once installed, go to the IE menu and uncheck the show links on favorites box

Well, I've downloaded the program and I've followed the instructions exactly as Microsoft said but when I tried to install it it said "The disk labeled 'Tweak UI' is now required. This disk is provided by your computer manufacturer. Click OK to continue." So I clicked ok and it refused to install without that disk. I was never given ANY disk by Hewlett Packard that was anything even related to Tweak UI. Could it possible be on my Win98 cd? Any additional info on how to solve this is greatly appreciated.

when it asks that you just have to point it to the location on your hard drive where the tweakui files are located. This is related to when tweakui used to be provided on the win98 disk. For more help installing it, go to www.winmag.com and on the front page there is a guide to installing tweakui 1.33.

Actually most of the time it really does install if you click on OK, even though it appears it didn't. Check here, Start>Settings>ControlPanel. Do you see an icon labeled Tweakui? If so, it's installed.

Here's an alternative method to rid yourself of the pesky "links" folder in favorites:

That's all the Tweakui tool does. It sets the attributes of the Links folder to Hidden.

Another solution is to actually use the links folder. You can put about four or five links on there (your regular favorite sites) and then arrange them so they will look compact on the top of your browser.

I usually take out the text of the buttons.

Check this out:

You can also right-click and then choose a different icon!
