shortcuts
I want to put shortcuts on my desktop to shutdown AND Standby my laptop.

what OS?
but Alt + F4 should the trick.

This question really doesn't belong in Digital Imaging...but:

Assuming Windows XP,

Right click on a clear area of the desktop.
Click New > Shortcut to open the Shortcut Wizard.
Type " shutdown -s -t 00 " without the quotes (BTW, those are zeroes at the end).
Click Next and type a name.
Click Finish and you're done.

If you want a different icon, right click the shortcut you just made, click Properties and select the Shortcut tab. Click Change Icon and select from the icons that are displayed.

If you want a reboot shortcut,
follow the above steps, but type this instead of the command above: " shutdown -r -t 00 " (remove the quotes).

Apparently it can, the command line is rather different.
