Skype now has free calls to land line and cell phones
This is really neat actually. I just downloaded it and tested it, and it's great! I don't know how long they will keep this thing free.

http://share.skype.com/sites/en/2006...dlines_an.html

This only works in the US and Canada.

www.skype.com

When you first download it, don't click on the green phone at the bottem, it will say you need Skype credit to make a call. But instead, click on the "Dial" tab at the top.

No its true... saw it on Pocketpcthoughts.com about 3 days ago now. There are problems you can initiate calls but you can't recieve them. Also I hear its sound quality is a little worse than that of the paid for service.

Neither are show stoppers for trying the service but in all that is what I hear.

BTW just an FYi I was told this is US only so those abroad should be warned.

Another good reason to live in the states! I was however reading some of the comments on the site regarding credits, etc. I remember years ago there was an internet phone service that was also free. The sound quality stunk, but it worked.

The quaility for me is great, if not better than a regular phone. The only bad thing is you can't recive calls.

Its free through Dec 31, 2006. They have not decided on a policy of whether it will remain so in 2007.

Not to mention that they are being sued by Streamcast networks. The people that wrote Skype are also the same ones that wrote Kazaa, kinda makes you wonder with all of the spyware that was installed with Kazaa. Still a good deal? I think I will steer wide of this one.

has anyone tried it in Canada? I'm having some issues saying it's not a valid number... I think it's due to the country code....

very useful thread

EDITED: Solved..... For those in Canada you gotta use: 0111 and then the actual phone number....
