Hiding confidential information with black marks works on printed copy, but not with electronic documents, the National Security Agency has warned government officials.

The NSA paper gives step-by-step instructions on how to strip a Microsoft Word document of confidential information and then convert it an Adobe Systems PDF file. The advice deals with text passages and images in the document, as well as with metadata.

I realize that Word documents can contain hidden information, but is that information still retained on the printed copy?

It seems like an easier way of keeping the "undo" (etc) info hidden would just be to print the file to a freeware "print to pdf" printer driver.

There's also freeware utilities to remove the hidden information from office files, which could be used before converting.

Trust the government to do things the hard way.
