Post One Way to Spot an eBay Scam
Check the message from eBay and view the source or "view original" and if you see something around the likes of "SOFTFAIL" for the sender especially if it says the sender is not permitted, then it is likely a scam. I spotted one today and reported it to eBay so I think it is best to share this with the community.

Ebay rarely sends out anything unsolicited. If you think it is a scam send it to their abuse department to help stop the proliferation of these scams. Here is their response to idendifying scam/spam email:

Well it turns out that the ebay order confirmation page that looked like an order through ebay that my friend was taking part in was forged.
The page seemed legit at first, but then I noticed spelling errors.
I then viewed the information in the message and found that it said "softfail" (it is inside of the message header and is a form of security) and then it told me the sender was not permitted. It turns out the scammer forged the eBay address and the mail. I reported the message to eBay using the investigations page on their site and they told me that in fact it was a scam and I then reported the message as phishing in gmail.

You can setup a filter in your mail client to reject emails from ebay.com with a header that says Received-SPF: softfail
Softfails aren't always junk but legit. emails from eBay should not Softfail.

does anyone use gmail?

i got emails from ebay and paypal...google sent them to my spam folder, even though they were from addresses @ebay.com or @paypal.com

a red bar appeared at the top of the screen saying that gmail detected them as phishing sites

Well if you go inside and check the header that should help answer the question.
The phishing filters on gmail is nice and you should report the message to ebay's investigation team ASAP.
