Dial-Up Checklist Not exactly a "tip" or a "trick", but I thought this could be a useful link for reference for those with Dial-up connection problems.
I'd like to give credit to the original author, but unfortunately I copied it from a now defunct web board and had to recreate it from a printed copy
I have verified them all against my own standard 56k dial-up configuration
============================================== WIN 98 DIAL-UP CONNECTION CHECKLIST
1) Assumes you CAN connect to your ISP.
2) Assumes you are NOT using a proxy server.
3) Assumes your ISP is using PPP and CHAPS.
4) This won't make your modem go faster.
5) Insures your dial-up connection is efficient.
-- DIAL-UP ADAPTER NETWORK SETTINGS:
Startup > Settings > Control Panel > Network > Configuration
1) Highlight "Dial-Up Adapter"
2) "Properties"
TABS:
Driver Type - Set to "Enhanced mode 32/16 bit NDIS Drivers"
Bindings - "TCP/IP" checked - clear all others
Advanced - You will see the following items:
>Enable Point to Point: - Set to "Yes"
>IP Packet size: - Set to "Auto" - advanced users tweak (MTU)
>Record a Log File: - No
>Use IPX header compress: - Set to "Yes" for now
-- DIAL-UP ADAPTER TCP/IP PROTOCOL SETTINGS
Startup > Settings > Control Panel > Network > Configuration
1) Highlight "TCP/IP"
2) "Properties"
TABS:
DNS Configuration: - Select "Disable DNS" - (See DNS note below)
Gateway: - Nothing should be selected
WINS Configuration: - Select "Use DHCP for WIN Resolution"
IP Address: - Select "Obtain IP address automatically"
Bindings: - Should be empty
Advanced: - "Property" should be "None"
NetBios: - NOT checked for "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP"
-- MODEM SETTINGS
Startup > Settings > Control Panel > Modem
TABS:
General - Highlight your modem and select "Properties"
General Tab:
>Set the "Maximum Speed" to 115200
Connection Tab:
>Data Bits: 8
>Parity: "None"
>Stop bits: 1
>Port Settings Box:
--"Check" in FIFO buffers; Note: Most 56k modems use 16550 UARTs
--Set both buffer sliders to "High"
>Advanced Box:
--Checks in: Use error control; Required to connect; Compress data; Use flow control; Hardware (RTS/CTS)
Distinctive Ring Tab:
>Usually nothing checked.
-- DIAL-UP DNS/ISP SETTINGS
My Computer > Dial-Up Networking
--Highlight the Dial-Up you use
--"right click" and select "Properties"
TABS:
General: - these settings should already be set.
Server Types
>Type of Dial-Up Server: Set to "PPP: Internet..."
>Enable software compression and TCP/IP are the only ones checked.
TCP/IP Settings:
>Server assigned IP - "dotted"
>Server assigned name server addresses - "dotted" - (see DNS note below)
>Use IP Header compression - "checked"
>Use default gateway on remote network - "checked"
Scripting Tab:
>leave alone for now
Multilink
>For users with two modems - leave alone for now
-- CHECK YOUR W98 DUN:
1) Do find on "rnaapp.exe"
2) Highlight and "right click" > Properties > Version
3) It should be: 4.10.2002/ 4.10.2222 W98 SE
