Cheapest memory in the UK?
When I bought a 128Mb strip of PC133 RAM a few months ago from an auction site, I thought the £23.00 price tag (incl. vat and p&p) was pretty good.
I've just come across an advert for a company called Crucial that sells the same strip for £13.49 excl. VAT = £15.85. I guess this won't include P&P, but it should still be less thatn £18.00 total.
That's the cheapest I've seen in the UK.
In contrast, PC World are selling strips for £45.00 (incl. VAT).

I haven't any slots left, so I'm not going to bother with Crucial for now, and I can't say whether they're a good/reliable/quick company or not.

For anyone wishing to check them out, go to: http://www.crucial.com/uk

The ad says you can enter your PC make/model and it will tell you what RAM you need.

I wouldn't normally advocate advertising, but this seemed really cheap. If anyone know of a cheaper (new) strip, let us know!

Hi Gram,

Crucial is a reputable outfit, as to the price and sevice I've not found any better of course that is one opinion and there may well be others. I suppose that is one of the many benefits of posting here at The Tech Guy.

It seems to me that the prices have come down to the current levels and that seems to be holding, I just don't think we can reasonably expect much lower pricing......................
Therefore I would suggest your primary concern be focused on dealing with a reputable outfit and that of course you provide the accurate info. so that you can in turn receive the right memory for your machine.
IMHO, and as in as much as I don't like 'recomending' I'll just say that if it were I, then I would go with Crucial.

I gotta go now so I can read in what is going on with your other post concerning the 'password remember' thingy.

Just purchased 128MB chip from Crucial Saturday 10-06-01 on-line
for an E-Machine 550 and the cost was $18.85 US. There was no
P&H involved and to my surprise in was on my doorstep Monday
afternoon 10-08-01! Can't beat that service.

Hi Davey,

e-machine hey? I'm working on a 500ix2 as I type this and I have a whole new prespective on 'em.
This one is not too bad at all, outside of the onboard video. I'm impressed overall this box has Win 98se and 128megs of ram and it seems to cruise along (surfing) pretty good.
I'm glad I've never poo-pood e-machines in the past, I've seen where so many people have...........live and learn, huh?

Gram,

Just order what you need from Crucial, you will not regret it.

Was not planning on upgrading the E since it has been pretty stable but the Norton Family Security URLLIST has grown beyond
the 64MB capability and the load of the list is taking upwards of a half hour to load before the kids go online.

Davey,

I'm not too familiar with Norton Security, however if we are talking about "anything" that will suck up that kind of resources (that ammount) in order to function within reason............

........ have you looked elsewhere like anywhere else? It is just that 30 minutes is forever (in real time too) doubleing the ram value seems to me will not do much more than throw a bandaid on it. If this is an ongoing 'continues to grow issue' then that is the problem.

Have you considered the restricted sites approach?
Talk to me.

Unfortunately it is not the allocation table resource problem it is the size of the restricted url listing table that has grown from 18MB when we purchased the security program to 46MB which is the latest load. I know that is allot of URL's but there is allot of junk out there that I prefer to keep the youngsters out of.
What is nice about the family security is you have Child, Teenager,
Adult, and Supervisor settings and within those lower settings
you can selectively Block like chatrooms, Gambling, Porn of course
and other major groups and also unlock certain sites if you as
Parent/Supervisor deem it ok for a certain user.
Again the unfortunate problem is that the list is growing by leaps and bounds and the load times are getting worse.
I Wish there was another way as you say using the Security section in IE but that is to superficial since the listing is way to large. One thing that did irritate me to know end was Nortons
solution to the problem was buy more RAM because it is cheap instead of splitting the URL load into two parts to expedite matters.

When I got my PC built, I foolishly never asked about spare memory slots. It came with 128Mb (single strip) and I added another 128Mb (single strip) into the only remaining slot .
The only option therefore is to get a 256 or 512Mb strip, which although I don't need at the moment, is likely to become standard in the future - It seems that most new PCs come with 256Mb these days.
That leaves me with a spare / redundant 128Mb strip, which I'd probably end up giving away to my brother (or selling him if I were shrewd!).
So, I'm not really in a hurry to get more memory, but in respect of the views of DarkStar and Davey, I'll definitely keep them in mind for the future.

My PC allocates 16Mb of the memory to my onboard graphics, so my PC says it has 240Mb RAM. My first priority is to fill my empty AGP slot, and I had intended to buy a good quality but cheap 32Mb card. However, with the increasing requirements of PC games, it looks like the safest bet would be to purchase (at least) a 64Mb card.
Although 16Mb onboard seems to my little mind like quite a lot, I tried playing Black & White and it got gradually slower and slower until I couldn't bear it.

So to improve my PC, I'll need more expensive memory, a more expensive graphics card... What's next? Windows XP? An extra HD? A DVD drive? A new processor? Yep, Probably.
Ah well, all I can do is prioritise until some nice person donates a few quid to the Gram cause, or I trip over a big bag of money in the street...

Maybe Crucial sell cheap graphics cards too?

Davey,

Not having any children, I just realized that I'm clueless as to the ammount of preventive measures any responsible parent has to put in place. I applaud the fact that you care enough to be sure you have done everything that you can, anything short of that is unacceptable and no reason could ever justify falling short of the mark.
As to Norton, I agree with you 100% and it makes one wonder since we know everything is all about "the allmighty buck" what in the heck are they thinking about?

Gram,

I now better understand what 'ya mean, just get the largest capacity ram that you need for now keeping in mind that if that'll do you until such time you trip over a big bag-o-money on the street then you should be alright.

Hey guys this is nice I don't think Kirkland will find us here, now we just have to go and secretly round up the others. hehehe

I've never used the Buddy button at the foot of the page, so I'm not sure what it does, but maybe that's how we could recruit people?

Nah, probably not. Kirkland would find us and blind us with science until we never "buddied" again!
Oh Jeez, I just realised, he might use the search by keyword, enter his own name and find us here, hiding from him!

I coudn't resist. I've just bought a 256Mb strip, bringing my RAM up to 368Mb (excluding the 16Mb graphics). It cost me £26.00 including postage = $37.74 (according to http://www.xe.com/ucc/). This might not be amazing by US standards, but it is extremely cheap in the UK.

Gram,

You did well, and that is a good price you should have it in your hands no later than Monday am, 'cause it's the weekend and all.

Trust me he would find us no matter what, of course it's fun to imagine what it might be like for him if he should just go to general forums one day and we were all gone. Oh Wah! hehehe.

Hey, Dark Star. Over here.

Kirkland will seek us out - it's what he does. And - Where are you going, I haven't finished yet - and Mulder's a moderator, he's sure to find us.
