Vista One-click Restore Point
Vista creates restore points at various times: daily, usually at Noon, and on bootup, as well as when some apps are installed, etc.

But you may want to make one before an important or experimental change.

Create a new shortcut on the desktop (right-click, New) and enter:

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe /d srrstr.dll,ExecuteScheduledSPPCreation

Customize the icon if you choose since the generic icon for rundll32 will be used by default.

Note that there will be no notification that the point has been created, but you will see it in System Properties Protection.

Yes. I discovered that I am more likely to make a point before installing software if the button is easily accessible than if I have to jump through hoops to make a new one.

I ran across this post while looking for something else. It looks like a neat idea, but I can't make it work. I set up the shortcut, but clicking on it doesn't create a restore point. I look in System Properties Protection and it's not there.

Not sure why. It works for me. I suppose you could try substituting C:\Windows for %WinDir%.

That doesn't work, either, but I found a shorter path to System Restore that's almost as good. Thanks for the help.
