missing two fine extensions there:

FlashBlock - does what it says on the tin, replace any flash animation with a placeholder and play button.

TrackMeNot - gives Google hard times to create a profile from your search data.

FlashBlock does help to alleviate annoying flash vids that only cause further download traffic if you are on dialup.

Trackmenot does have some controversy about sucking up bandwidth, but using CsutomizeGoogle helps somewhat.

Adding other search engines to Firefox search window from Mycroft Project at Mozilla means you don't need to use Google directly, but from a metasearch engine which uses several search engines in parallel, you are sure to get lots of results - and with Clusty you get better categorization of the results.

Another website mentioned the RefControl Firefox add-on which I am going to check out right now.
