right click on C drive
left click on properties
a dialouge box will open showing you the amount of free and used space on C drive.
left click on "Disk Clean-up"
another box telling you windows is calculating amount of disk space it can clean up. Wait until this process ends.

When doing that it prompted to delete the OLD COMPRESSED FILES... but i did not delete that .. what are those fies?? | | Senior Member with 1,412 posts. | | Join Date: Feb 2006 Location: The Pitt, BC Experience: Omnigeek | | Download, install and run DiskData ( http://www.diskdata.com/ -there are other utils that do the same thing, but this is the one I use). It will show you in pie-chart format how your space is being used and will help you find large files you may not know you have.
Beyond that... why not just add another hard drive? Tons of space is super-cheap - 80GB can be had for as low as $50, 160GB for $15-$20 more. | | Junior Member with 6 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2007 Experience: Intermediate | | extra hard drive How do you hook up the extra hard drive? Can a person go between the two without plugging and unplugging etc? | | Senior Member with 1,412 posts. | | Join Date: Feb 2006 Location: The Pitt, BC Experience: Omnigeek | | Easiest way is just to get an external drive and plug it into a USB port, although that will be slow if your computer's USB ports aren't 2.0 standard.
Either way, you wouldn't be plugging and unplugging... most older machines have the capacity for four drives, two on each of two IDE channels. Typically, only your machine will only come with two - one hard drive, and one CD or DVD drive. A second drive can be plugged into the cable for either, it just needs to have the proper jumper setting. If you're not familiar with the process, most stores that sell the drives will install it as well, for a nominal charge. | | Trusted Advisor - Gone but never forgotten with 9,280 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2000 Location: Whitby, Ontario | | Run System Restore (Start > Run > msconfig > Launch System Restore button
System Restore Settings (left side)
Click on the C Drive
Then Settings button
Move the slider down into the 1 to 1.5GB range.
OK your way out.
Run Internet Explorer
Tools >Internet Options
Settings Button under Temporary Internet Files
Change the number to 15MBs
OK your way out
All files (and folders) in those \TEMP folders can be deleted. (as long as you are not in the middle of an install and have not booted yet)
Select your Recycle Bin, right mouse, properties
Move the slider to a lower percentage, depending on the size of your drive and the size of the files you wish to keep before you empty the recycle bin.

#10 | In the \TEMP folder, ALL files AND folders can be deleted (given you didn't put them there on purpose! )
As for System Restore, does the account you are running under have Administrative privileges? | | Junior Member with 7 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2007 Experience: Beginner |
