Whats in your toolkit?
I just obtained an entry level PC repair job. I just wanted to ask some of you more senior techs and It guys what are your essential tools? Any killer programs or disks that you have to have to help? How often do you use a post card? Or a multimeter? I just want to build up a nice kit to have handy at the site. Thanks in advance.

Equip yourself with the basics and add to it as you discover the need. Most hardware level PC repair is 90% analysis and 10% parts replacement. Common hand tools, a multi-meter, etc. are usually sufficient. For working with network and phone cables, you might want crimping tools and connectors, etc.

My on-site toolkit :

- Craftsman Micro 24-piece screwdriver set
- RadioShack 200V Multimeter
- IDE to USB Adapter with Molex Power Supply
- BartPE Disc, includes F-MOD filesystem manager and malware cleanup tools
- Arctic Silver thermal grease
- Pliers, End nippers, Wire cutters, Tweezers, Crimper
- Wrist grounding strap
- 7ft Ethernet patch cable
- Paperclip (anyone who's worked in PC repair knows how invaluable a paperclip can be)
- Antec Power supply tester
- 18-gauge automotive wire
- 10/100 Network Interface Card
- Bag of 3-inch zip ties
- 80mm fan

Newest addition:
- My ASUS Eee Galaxy 4G

Of course... at any given time, half of these things are missing because my brother always borrows my tools and never brings them back.

Get to know how to configure a BIOS to set the order to boot first from a CD, then to hard drive.

Then, get yourself a Linux Live CD, and read my post in General Security today entitled: MBR Rootkit, A New Breed of Malware here.

Note: A free Linux (Ubuntu) Live CD can be ordered here.
