I have an old Gateway on the way out, I think and the person operating it would be much happier continuing use of XP rather than adjusting to Vista. Appreciate any info. I have Googled and only found Dell so far. Thanks. | | Senior Member with 1,412 posts. | | Join Date: Feb 2006 Location: The Pitt, BC Experience: Omnigeek | | You could always try any local computer specialty shops, most will custom-build you a machine or have pre-built systems and put any OS you want on it, or even sell it to you without an OS, so you can buy and install the one you want yourself. This is an example of such a store that I use regularly in this area: http://www.a-power.com | | Moderator with 36,830 posts. | | Join Date: Aug 2003 Location: Vermont | | Why not use the XP that is on the old machine (if not OEM)? | | Senior Member with 1,412 posts. | | Join Date: Feb 2006 Location: The Pitt, BC Experience: Omnigeek | | A growing number of newer "name-brand" machines don't have full driver support for XP, and some will even puke on themselves if you attempt to install XP instead of Vista (a friend recently bought a new HP that did this - the store tech had to wipe the drive with a Linux boot disc before he could install XP). I also recently helped a friend revert his Vista-equipped laptop to XP, and while there were all the necessary drivers, some of them were a major pain to get working right.
This is why a custom-built, no-name-brand system tends to be preferable for non-Vista use. | | Senior Member with 1,362 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 1999 Location: Oklahoma City, OK, USA Experience: Intermediate | | Quote:

Thanks for response though. I am finding the best place for getting pc's with XP seems to be EBay. There is a pretty good selection there right now - and many of them include manufacturer's warranty. Of course, buying there, I would only consider a reputable seller with 100% positive feedback. | | Account Disabled with 312 posts. | | Join Date: Nov 2007 Experience: Beginner | | Quote:

sure, Tigerdirect has lots of desktops that come with Windows Pro SP2 such as these two. http://tinyurl.com/249zwe http://tinyurl.com/yt2xql http://tinyurl.com/28ktos
