Anyone got a bunch of tips for optimizing?
My P3 500, 256MB RAM, running Win98 1st Edition recently started going a bit jumpy. It's still pretty fast but quite often I can tell it's 'juttering' and I can hear the 'juttering' when some of the event sounds are played.

I thought I'd stick this thread here since I'm sure everyone can benefit from the info.

I know about:

-deframenting (at least every 2-3 months) I do it at least every month
-deleting all files in Windows Temp folder (*.tmp files)
-Removing invalid reg keys (using System Mechanic and Reg Clean)
-Disabling startup items (only running bare essentials on startup)
-Removing unused programs (I guess I could take out a few more)

What else can I do? Windows SWP file?

Thanks ^_^ Appreciate your precious time

No one? K. I removed a whole bunch of fonts so that should speed up the startup. Fonts like Arial Bold and Arial Italic since I can just format text in most programs anyway.

I also changed my colour setting to display 16-bit High Colour instead of 32-bit.

I'm not using Active Desktop anymore. I converted my wallpaper images to bitmap so I don't need Active Desktop to use them. The bitmap files take up more HD space but I'm saving sys resources so I guess that fine.

I'm not gonna lower my resolution coz I like it how it is but I know this affects performance.

Got any other ideas? Please?

You don't say how much of your resources are in use at any one time - how much HD space you have free; how much of the RAM is freely available (check in System Configuration).

Have you checked Device Manager for any conflicts?

Have you done a Scandisk lately to identify disc/sector errors?

Have you cleaned out Temp Internet Files and emptied the Recycle Bin?

Have you checked for viruses and the like?

Have you considered upgarding to 98SE? or other os?

Have you installed any MS patches to your basic 98 configuration?

Just a few thoughts. You original post was only raised about 11 hours ago. Give us time to look into your problem.

And remember, this is the holiday season and we are all volunteers here!

Mike (I'm off to the country for some much needed r'n'r' myself now.)

On startup I get 90% resources free.
HD space - 7.85 capacity, I have ½ free
No conflicts
Haven't done a scan disk recently but I'll do that soon
Recently scanned for viruses with up-to-date virus checker (no infections)
Recently defragged.
Yep, cleared temp and temp Internet folder
Upgrading....not sure
Yep, downloaded updates and patches

Thanks for the reply. It's not really a problem but I was hoping for some general tips for speeding up my comp. ^_^
