Switching computers off
Apologies if this has been answered before, but should a computer be turned off when not in use? I have heard
it's best to leave it on all the time, while others think that it should be turned off each night. Do you guys leave your computers running all the time? Any tips/suggestions would be appreciated.

Personally I turn mine off when I don't plan on using them. If nothing else it's a possible fire hazard. My son tried to leave his on all the time until I invited him to pay the power bill

Cadlad,
Welcome to TSG
I would shut down once a day or if your not going to use it for a couple hours.
It will get you back the system resources and memory from stay on.
Also if you don't know I would do a scan and defrag once a week.

My PC alternates between staying on and being turned off...
It mostly depends on how much downloading I have left to go on Kazaa!
Those 600-700MB movies take a while to download!

Hey! I would recomend keeping it turned off on a regular basis, it needs its rest, it is best for perfomance. Be warned, I have heard kazaa has massive spyware

My computers are turned on in the morning and shut down when I go to bed. I have heard that turning it on and off all the time shortens it's life span. Never had a problem with them and one of them is seven years old ( Packard Bell).

Here at work we use Gateways. Gateway's instructions are to leave them on. We had a big ta-doo about it all because the big budget boss thought it was too expensive. We gathered information on power supply replacements etc. He realized that the electric wasn't everything. We comprimised...we turn our monitors off at night and leave the CPU's running. I tell my users to shut down every Friday before the go home, just to clear things out and cool things down. This has been working well for us.
THIS THREAD HAS EXPIRED.
