Tweaking Windows Startup
Tweaking Windows 9x, ME, XP & 2000 startup time.

Click on Start, Run type in msconfig & hit Enter. Now select the General tab.

The first thing you should do is set the Startup selection type to Selective startup & Untick Process Config.sys/Autoexec.bat/Winstart.bat file. At this stage you should be getting over DOS & other such legacy support.

Though should you require DOS Drivers or some other environmental parameters to be loaded on your system then be sure to leave the appropriate .bat file option Ticked. Then click on the startup tab and uncheck anything there not needed for startup. That should give your system a faster start.

I just want to comment on this for those of us who are Aptiva owners. I tried this tweak and afterwards got a "Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module unknown" error message when I opened control panel. I was able to open control panel after I clicked O.K. on the error message with no further problems. I went through the list of cpl. files and found the one causing the error message was I.B.M. tools which is loaded in the autoexec. bat. I thought I got rid of most of the crap I.B.M. dumped into my computer but I guess I found one more turd!

I've found this site very helpful for disabling Startup items. Straight ahead advice and have never experienced problems from using it. Unless you have broadband, the Zip list is recommended because it is l-o-n-g.
