MS-DOS Incompatibility mode SOLVED (for good)!
After days of pouring through posts, archives (mine and others), trying for a fix of my MS-DOS incompatiblity mode with my dual HDD rig, someone finally gave out the solution, only *parts* of which are on five or six of the different sites I visited.

BEST SOLUTION:
Go to: Start > Run: at "Open," type: MSCONFIG then enter.
At the "System Configuration Utility" GENERAL tab,
UNCLICK *BOTH* of these items:
"Process Config.sys" AND "Process Autoexec.bat" then restart your computer.

DONE.

That fix resolves the confilict you get with the different (and seemingly incompatible) Bus Master IDE drivers.

*Caution: the fix above PROBABLY won't work for MOST Windows95 rigs, but does work for WIN98x (not NT) machines.

That's because there are probably CD-ROM drivers loading from those files and they are trying to assign a CD-ROM to the D designation which will casue a problem if MSCDEX is trying to traslate your IDE FAT file system to an CDFS file system....thus the compatibility mode error.

or you could simply delete the config.sys and autoexec.bat files as Windows doesn't need them anyway...unless you're needing something for DOS Mode!

We don't disagree, but Windows3(x), Windows95 (a) and (b), and some Windows 95(b) machines jumped up to Windows 98 *do* need the two files.

By deactivating them in Windows 98x, there is no need to rebuild or reload them if you *do* ever want to use them for whatever reason: simply go back and click on them.
++OEM and retail Windows 95 machines should not use this method:
only grief follows.

That the problem with the MS-DOS compatability mode problem:
No one, not Intel, not Microsoft, not any Intel/Microsoft forum, not CNET, not ZDNet, not any forum or list could ever agree on just what the hoot even causes the condition, nor have they (Intel/Microsoft) aplogized for the foul ups their proprietary Bus Master IDE controller drivers cause.
Just the lost productivity due to MSDCM bugs ought to have brought them and IDE peripherals makers together to do a STANDARD workaround, especially for Win95 users.

Since I unclicked the two files, my drives are far faster (and a little cooler) and are way more productive, which is why we buy those huge 7,200 and 19,00rpm HD drives anyway.
