Don't forget DMA!!
Also, don't forget to enable the DMA for your Hard Drive. After most installs, it will not do it by default.

Open control panel - system applet. Go to the device manager tab. Click on hard-disk controllers and press properties. Check the Dma-enabled box. Restart

DMA enabling
People! Its nice to hand out free advice and tips put let's not make some dangerous assumptions! Not all computers support DMA. I found out the hard way! I followed such "helpful" advice, as it apparently makes your computer run faster. Well, it messed up my hard and CD-ROM drivers so bad the computer ran in ms-dos mode and I couldn't even use the CD-ROM. The registry and system got scrambled so badly I had to reformat and do a clean install. Let's not kill each other with kindness.

Sorry about the DMA thing. I guess I should have posted that not all computers support it. I'm trying to think of how to know if your computer does support it or not, but all I can think of is if the new install runs slower then before, then to see if it's enabled.
