tame the cable munchers!
I need tips & tricks to keep kitties away from my computer cables. I've used Bitter Apple spray which has worked well in the past on my thicker cables like USB & electrical. But my brand new printer has a skinny cable like an earbud wire diameter & one of the buggers has snacked on it & ruined it. No animals were harmed, it was unplugged at the time & HP is sending me a replacement no charge.
I've seen citrus scented clear plastic tubing but haven't tried it yet. I already have spiral wrap on the phone cord & that works. So all you folks with critters in the house...any ideas or things that work for you? I plan on getting more spiral wrap as well as trying the scented tubing but maybe there's something I don't know about yet?

Put what in another room, the cats or the computer, LOL!? The comp is in the living room, the cats are wherever they feel like going. I shoved the desk tighter to the wall for now & got some 'cable-it' spiral type wrap. The scented tubing I mentioned apparently stinks to high heaven. It's supposed to smell like citrus which cats don't care for but the reviews on Amazon likened it to & I quote "burnt macaroni farts."
Thanks for your input.

sometimes I really wonder about us humans...., including myself!!!

My first thought upon reading that phrase was....did they burn the macaroni, or the farts to get that smell comparison??

Years ago went I got married the wife had cats that she let go any place they wanted and I said that was not right for them to be any place they want and on anything and that really means all over the kitchen and on the tables, counter, fridge etc.
You can teach them but it takes time. I use my finger and pop them in top of the nose and after a short time they learned.
You tell them NO or OK and show them what places they can and can not go and your word. On the places you do not want them at in the house you take them to each and say the word and give a light tip on the nose and I mean light because your just showing them.
When you catch them then pop them on the nose and they will stop.
It will not hurt them but they will not like it so they learn to adjust to it.
Now was it more easy for me I do not know because I was also someone new around the cats but don't know if that had any effect or not. I know the one cat was the best cat I ever had.

But look here for other ways.

I'm exaggerating a bit when I said they go where they want. They are pretty well trained. I rebundled all the cords & covered them with spiral wrap then sprayed Bitter Apple all behind the desk. It was just the one cord they've ruined in all the time I've had them. Maybe the newness of the printer got them curious. All my other stuff had been there all along & they never bothered with anything. I was just asking to see if there was something I hadn't heard of. I might go poking around some pet care message boards to see what they have to say. Thanks everyone!

May I suggest .. Hang some Balloons at the back of your computer.

Our Ornery little gray cat likes to chew into Box Springs … Her only destructive habit.
A couple of years ago .. We rented a Condo in Florida .. So we started Balloon Therapy.

We would pop a Balloon in her face .. And let one go and chase her with it…
And we repeated this therapy every couple of days or so.

When we got to Florida … We put some Balloons under the bed … She would not go near it.
