Basic Script File Will Remove Windows Messenger in WinXP
Came across this script file that will remove Windows Messenger in WinXP

I did it, and it worked fine. The only problem is that if you use MSN Explorer a message appears talking about how WM is a critical part of that program. I reinstalled it, as I use MSN mail. But, if you don't need MSN Explorer and want to stop that WM program from running whenever you boot - HERE

You can Also rename messangers folder in program files and change it back if you want to use it.

Can you be more specific? And, will I be able to still run MSN Explorer for my eMail?

Thank-You.

By the way - Nice credentials.

Go to your Programs folder.
Rename the Messenger folder to MessengerNo or MessengerIHateYou or MyNameIsMrHappy. Messenger will no longer load when you open Outlook.
To get your Messenger back, just rename GodzillaAteMyPants back to Messenger and all will be restored. Especially your dignity.

As far as my credentials, I would have posted my brainbench certificate but I didnt pass the test.

Finally, after all of the tips I have tried, I think your suggestion is the key. Seems to have stopped it from loading, and I am still able to use MSN Explorer for a mail account. AN NO ERROR MESSAGES !

I just want to confirm that rena the folder only prevents it from loading, and that other programs can still tap into it if needed.

I have read so many suggestions on how to stop it from loading, wonder why nobody has ever said to just ne-mane the folder before?

Again, thanks!

Well, thought it did the trick, but not totally.

I ran Norton Utilities to see if it thought something was amiss. It came back with a couple of errors, which I had corrected. When I re-booted, the monster was in my tray again, and another Messenger folder was created. So I am assuming that Norton un-did what I had done.

I guess I can do it each time I run Norton, or close it out from the tray each time I boot. Hate the thing!

That error is that it wants Messenger to run bceause its used with lots of different windows features. Figure out which errors it is and dont let Norton correct them.

Thanks again

I decided to stop MSN Explorer from loading and allow Windows Messenger to load. I only use these for forum mail. WM has a nice mail notification option, that I don't think I had with Explorer, but perhaps I never knew it if it did.

Also, WM does not chang the interface of some of the applications I was using, like Explorer seemed to. Another bonus, I guess.

One quick follow-up question.

Which one uses more resources. Windows Explorer, or Windows Messenger, if you happen to know. And how much more does one use over the other.

Again, thanks for taking the time to answer this.

I dont know which takes more resources but I think there is a freeware that monitors each programs CPU usage. The feature is only built into Windows NT.
