After you click appearance, click on the "other" button below the basic colors. Click in the 'rainbow' to select any color you want.

Do this:

1. Right click an an open space on your desktop
2. Select Properties
3. Select the Appearnce Tab at the top
4. Under "Item", scroll to desktop
5. To the right of that is "Color"...click the little arrow next to that to get the dropdown
6. At the bottom of the dropdown is a gray box called "Other"...click it!
7. You should see that color "rainbow pattern and a crosshair like device in it...move that around with you mouse
8. To the side of the color pallate is a scroll bar (vertical one)...that lightens and darkens each color selected.
9. Once you decide upon a color, click the "OK" button, then "Apply"

You may need to restart your computer, but that will give you the colors you want.

Now...Did you mean the desktop or the application background/Window background? Either way...the same steps apply.

Hope this helps!

The directions were perfect notredame888, that is unless you have some our of date monitor or graphics card. If one of those are locked at 8bit, or something like that, don't expect much. It's time to upgrade.
