Important Suggestion
Hi guys. This is something that I thought of just now. This is a good way to get rid of junk mail. You know how there are filters or "custom filters" in basically every account? Well, just use those filters to get rid of junk mail. What you do is you put common porn and other junk mail SUBJECT words into the filter and set the filter to send those messages straight into the trash. Subjects like *****, sex, teen, diploma, mortgage, etc. Look at my attachment. This won't get rid of all of your junk mail, because not all senders put these subjects into their email, but at least some, these are the most common ones.

Good idea ilusha2. Many people do not know how to set up filters and the like, and others, myself included, can't set up Outlook to delete mails from the server based on content, unless they are downloaded first. After it's been downloaded, it's too late, as you have already wasted the connection time necessary to download their Spam.

I would suggest using something like MailWasher to check mails first, mark, mails to be blacklisted, or even entire domains, and never see them again. This product allows you to delete straight from the mail server, as well as set up Bounceback mails to the spammers, fooling their systems into believing that your email address is not valid, thereby removing you from their lists.

It is free, and very useful. Just train yourself into opening it first, remove any unwanted mails, then process the application. It will delete the ones you want deleted, and then open your email program to download the mails you do want.

Thanks Randy, but I don't use a program, I just use yahoo and hotmail (web mail), and not outlook, etc. Will mail washer be good for these also? Listen, look at the message that we both are helping -- replaced power supply, monitor doesn't turn on. I want you to tell me if you agree with my suggestion and what else you can recommend.

I use hotmail too. I have mine set so the only thing going into my inbox is from people in my address book and site I approve like this one. Everything else goes into my junk mail which I glance at a couple times a week before dumping it. That is just to make sure I don't lose one I may want. Sure keeps the inbox clean.

Hi ilusha2, I don't use webmail, cause I like, and am used to using, Outlook. Also, with the amount of work I do, I keep emails for years, and webmail doesn't do that well, with limited storage. Also, the emails I tend to use a lot are work related, which doesn't bode well with a Hotmail or Yahoo extension!!

MailWasher does not work with webbased mail, yet, so that would not be an option for you, but your methods only work for webbased mail services, not POP3 ones that would utilize Outlook or Outlook Express.

As to the threads we are both working on, that's the lovely thing about this Forum! There is no proprietary motives for anyone. We love it when as many people join in, as long as they are providing well intentioned advice. You disagreed with me in another thread, and pointed out where you think the problem might lie. i have no problems with that, as you were right in the suggestions you made. You even pointed out that you were sorry for disagreeing with me. that is nice, cause it soothes my ruffled ego and it shows that you are truly trying to offer good advice. that will never be frowned upon.

Keep up the good work!!!

Tips and Tricks is OK, as long as we can rename the Subject to Important Suggestion re Mail filters and Spam.

Otherwise might be a good idea to put it in Internet and Email!!

Hi Guys:

I did a search on this site regarding spam and found the link to Mailwasher here. It is great! I don't use yahoo or hotmail or any other webmail because my ISP allows me 7 e-mail accounts. I use 5 of them and Mailwasher handles all five accounts beautifully. I have already irradicated porn, spam and junk mail from my acounts and I highly recommend it to everybody.
~Jim

P.S: It could go in Reviews too!

Well, guys, I actually am glad with hotmail. Since I have set my filters today, I have only received 3 emails. I actually don't have to worry about losing any important mail, because I only use Hotmail for Junk mail. What I do is when I sign up for anything on the web, I put in the hotmail address. This way, if any of the companies sell my email account, it won't bother me! I use three other addresses for personal mail. The best ones that I have found are Netscape and Angelfire, THEY GET NOOOO JUNK MAIL AT ALL!!!

Hello

I also tried Mailwasher, but couldn't get it to accept my settings.
(IE6). Really need a very easy one to configure.

Dan Mc - I think hewee already helped you with his link.

T2 - What settings are you referring to? I have found it to be very easy to setup, and the only thing I have seent hat is annoying is that it doesn't allow my Office Shortcut Toolbar to appear from its autohide.

Hello RandyG

I get the message that my mail server cannot be found, please enter another address!

I only know the one address - pop3.blueyonder.co.uk

Does this cast any light? I tried and tried and just gave up.

Thx

If you check out the account details in your Outlook or OE, then you should be able to see the pop and smtp server names. They usually have something like mail.servername. com(org, net, co.uk, etc)

In both Outlook and OE, go to Tools, Accounts, Mail tab and double-click the account. Info is on Servers tab. make sure you enter it in MailWasher exactly the way it appears there.
