A few nibblers for win98
MAKE SINGLE FILES ALWAYS SHOW THEIR EXT.--
go to veiw\options\file types and find all the files you want to always show their extentions for and check the box.

IF YOU CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO INSTALL A PROGRAM--
try right clicking on a .inf file and finding install.

ADDITIONAL CONFIGURATION OPTIONS ARE FOUND--
run msconfig It contains options to disable startup processes as well as running processes and other things.

ADD OR DELETE FROM START MENU IN--
c:\windows\start menu

ADD OR DELETE REBOOT POPUPS (autorun entries)--
c:\windows\all users\start menu\programs\startup
Can also use programs like, "startup list" "reg cleaner" "ad aware" that search the registry.

ADD SHORTCUTS ON EITHER SIDE OF TASKBAR--
just drag it down

TO MAXIMIZE WINDOWS THAT STAY MAXIMIZED--
You may not need to be so rigid with all these steps. Try to just manually drag the window to full and then hold in ctrl while you close it with the x. It works on my computer. If that doesn't work do this:
Start IE, right click any link on a web page, and select Open in a New Window.
Go back to the first IE window you opened and close it.
Return to the second window and manually drag it to fill the screen.
(Do not use the maximize button, for that's a temporary setting that will not be retained.)
Now hold the Ctrl button, and close this second window, holding the Ctrl button depressed, using 'close' in the File menu (important!).

Can also do it on the desktop. The only step here is to hold in ctrl when you close it (can even be maximized; and no need to go to file, just use the x).

TO SEE FILES WHEN DRAGGING--
go to veiw, folder options, veiw, at bottom check the box.

To add "Open With" for all files--
Either hold in shift while right clicking and the open with is there, or

Place the following in a text file and rename it as a .reg file with no spaces (can use_though). Double click on it and it will update the registry.

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\openas\command]
@="C:\WINDOWS\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1"

Now go to start\run, type regedit, find your new entry. If default, when you are highlighted on command doesn't have--
C:\WINDOWS\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1
then double click on default and put it in.

CAN ADD TO "SEND TO" LIST--
place shortcuts in c:\windows\sendto

Good tips, have one to add to the list. You can automatically minimize all windows, revealing the desktop.

From the Run Menu or command prompt run ShowDe~1.SCF. I actually have a shortcut to it on my QuickLaunch bar so I can just click that and be on my desktop, and Set Alt + CTRL + D to go to the desktop. You can also bookmark C:\WIndows\System\Shode~1.scf and go to your bookmark. It will prompt you, choose to Open or Run and it will go to desktop.

Brendan,
That can be done using the keyboard too! I bet you know about that

You can try these combos -

Windows+D - It'll minimize all the Windows and show the desktop! Pressing the Windows+D will bring up all the windows!

You can do the same using the -

Windows+M to minimize and Shift+Windows+M to maximize/restore the windows!

edit : Changed the Ctrl to Windows!!!

Brendan,
My mistake!

Its Windows+D and not Ctrl+D. I edited my earlier post. So check with that!

Hope that works out for you too
