i'm new!
hello everyone! i just recently learned of the beauty of a UNIX-run system, is there any way i can just partition out the rest of my hd w/o formatting everything to put unix on???

Yup.
Partition Magic lets you resize and create partitions without formatting.
So does partition commander but I have heard better reviews of Magic.

Many Unix/Linux distributions allow you to specify where the O/S should be installed (and in how many partitions). Both Mandrake and Slackware Linux do this, for example, so you can install Unix/Linux even with another O/S already installed on the hard drive (assuming you have sufficient free space on the drive).

You might also want to think about a dual-boot system if you have any use for the O/S that's already installed.
